The COVID-19 Pandemic has been a heated discussion topic in recent years, and educators have successfully navigated through uncertainty and challenges. Bearing the 2022 APATE annual conference in mind, the education field now shifts its focus to other educational possibilities, such as multiculturalism and sustainability.
The United Nations issued its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in September 2015. It aimed to end poverty in all forms, envisioning “a world of universal respect for human rights and human dignity, the rule of law, justice, equality and non-discrimination,” and address education as one of the essentialities for the agenda. Sustainability education, in a broad sense, may appear in the form of environmental education, ecojustice education, education for sustainable development, and so on. Many countries, therefore, look to multicultural education as the solution for realizing sustainability. However, during the decade since the agenda was put forward, how exactly has education as a discipline, concerning the experiences of various countries, achieved sustainability through multiculturalism? How has multicultural education been understood, initiated, and integrated within educational systems, curricula, and teaching practices? How should the role of teacher education be modulated and approached for such realization?
At the 2023 APATE annual conference, Asian-Pacific nations gather once again and share their experiences on the issues, providing insights for finding possible solutions for these issues regarding multicultural education and sustainability.
